March 2008: Eureka! With a little help and moral support from my friends (thanks Ruth) I seem to have got over the problems updating the site - so I hope to start adding lots more photos soon. February was a funny month..work, especially the interesting kind, was a little thin on the ground despite spending a lot of time doing quotes. I put it down to post festive season blues, and increasing material and delivery costs I'm having to pass on, making jobs look pricey. Nevertheless, I continued improving the workshop facilities, with the additions of a new d.c. tig welder and oxy propane equipment. Sadly, I also had to replace my ancient mig welder which died the very day the new tig arrived - whether by coincidence, or in a fit of pique I couldn't say! I can safely say that outgoings considerably exceeded income last month! BUT.. the beginning of March brought interesting and challenging jobs by the bucketful! I'm making a funky ballustrade for a lady who refers to me exclusively as "groovy Will". There's a nice organic handrail/ballustrade in the offing for another local client, and I've just had a very positive meeting with a school, who've commissioned me to make a tree sculpture in copper. This will be my first real step into the field of public art. I'm also about to produce some rustic hardware for a local craftsman who makes beautiful cleft oak gates and fencing.(www.cleftwood.com) |
March 2008: Have made a start on the funky ballustrade although the weather's against me (have had to make a mock up of the staircase in the yard to make sure I get the angles right!) Made 5 prs reproduction ring latches for a local builder - classic example of a simple looking item that's actually very tricky and time consuming to make by hand..underquoted as usual! The tree sculpture project has stalled at the last minute over fears the scrap value of the piece may prove too tempting to thieves. What a world we live in when fear of crime prevents honest people from improving their surroundings with a little art! I hope that protecting the work with "smartwater" may be sufficient deterrent, at least to make the installation insurable! |
